Medicare adds Acupuncture: What do you need to know?

It is true that Medicare has added Acupuncture services for low back pain.  However, it is a two step process in order for Licensed Acupuncturists to provide that service.  The first step has been completed with Medicare approving the treatment.  The second step is for Medicare to approve Licensed Acupuncturists to provide the service.  This will take about a year.  


What does this mean if you have Medicare in 2021?  If you have a supplemental program that covers Acupuncture, you may have coverage.  This is still be sorted out by the insurance companies.  If you have straight Medicare, then the only people approved to provide the service are Physicians, who are largely untrained.  Last search showed we have one fully trained Medical Doctor in the state of Oregon to perform Acupuncture.  


It is a frustrating situation, one that we are well aware of and we are doing all we can to move along the approval process with Medicare.  The pandemic has made this process even harder.  As usual, I will do all I can to keep you all informed as this process moves forward!
